about

On January 23, 1996, after splitting from label PIAS, the band aimed to encapsulate their live energetic performances With a hiatus of four months and members busy with other pursuits, Danny Evans and Tom Piper orchestrated a recording at the Hacienda’s acoustically superior room, The Gay Traitor.

Scrounging for equipment, they assembled a 16-track ADAT system. The show was a typical Fads show full of energy and new material yet it marked their final performance—not by design, but that’s the way it worked out.

An attempt was made to finish off the mix but enthusiasm dwindled and the band members dispersed and the project was abandoned.

A decade later in 2006, reunion whispers surfaced, buoyed by alluring promoter offers. The recordings were revisited, only to be lost when the studio was burgled. Left with the half-finished mixes In 2023, during their now annual retreat, releasing the unfinished mixes was proposed.

Out of courtesy Danny who had put so much work into previous attempts the band informed him that they were releasing the unfinished recording. However, perhaps promoted by the text he had received earlier, two days later he stumbled upon a file named “Fads Monitor” on Elbow’s hard drive library. Rooting around an old cupboard he found the drive and Tom leaped into action getting the old Mac he had held onto out of a pigsty in Stafford and with some tech wizardry fired it up and got the contents of the hard drive onto a modern system.

Danny stripped off all the overdubs and just mixed the performance as they were. With the advances in technology and the all-important benefit of hindsight, primarily that some things are just best left as they are, the recordings then sprung to life in all their original glory. Turns out you can catch lightning in a bottle!
